Aerospace is a growing industry that is becoming more and more advanced. People fly for work as planes become safer and traveling is made easier. Also, the space industry has made large jumps both in the government and the private sector. As with any industry, the goal of the people involved is to reduce costs while maintaining or increasing the level of quality. With artificial intelligence, technology and service are able to be revolutionized in many different ways.

Predicting When Maintenance Is Needed

When flying airplanes daily it is quite necessary to ensure they are in proper shape to travel. In order to do this with Artificial Intelligence, “A huge amount of data is given as the input and with use of Artificial Intelligence and predictive maintenance solutions, data points and meaningful insights are deduced as output”. Therefore companies are able to minimize accidents by making sure that all planes are safe while flying. Cost is also able to be minimized because airlines will be able to predict and schedule maintenance in a cost-effective manner. Artificial intelligence is clearly able to help companies within the field of aerospace.

Training Pilots using Artificial Intelligence Technology

AI simulators can also help to train pilots who will then pilot commercial and private planes. Artificial intelligence environments and simulators are able to effectively simulate environments so that pilots can experience realistic scenarios. In this way, pilots will be more prepared for real experiences and emergencies. “These simulators can also be used to collect and analyze several data with regards to training for creating personalized training data with biometrics to track an individual’s performance”. Pilots are, therefore, assessed better and their trainers will be able to see their strengths and weaknesses. It is very difficult to recreate actual experiences like flying in the air. However, artificial intelligence has made it as real as possible through simulators.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve Fuel Efficiency

AI can also help cut budgets in terms of fuel costs. One example of this is the “French company Safety Line has developed a machine learning tool that can optimize climb profiles to pilots before each flight”. This is particularly useful because an aircraft consumes the most fuel of the entire flight while it is taking off from the ground. Of course, companies are working to create other solutions to this problem of fuel by using lighter weight materials to build planes but artificial intelligence is still key in reducing fuel costs. These improvements in fuel costs can make a large difference in a company’s cost of operation.

How NASA Uses Artificial Intelligence with the FDL

An innovation in space that is being worked on by NASA also involves AI. A project being worked on involves using artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to predict asteroids. NASA created a Frontier Development Lab in order to bring together “science and computer engineering early-career doctoral students with experts from the space agency, academia, and some of the world’s biggest technology companies. Partner companies contribute…  and…  [Their technology is] already helping identify asteroids, find planets, and predict extreme solar radiation events”. Although humans can already use technology while investigating asteroids, this technology will helpfully speed up the process. Hopefully, the technology will be able to make use of the large amounts of data that are collected. Without this NASA is unable to use all this data with humans alone analyzing it, this demonstrates how invaluable artificial intelligence is to NASA.

Using Artificial Intelligence in Aerospace Service

AI can also help in the service area of aerospace. With technology like chatbots, questions can be answered instantly in a way that was not possible years ago. Now, “A survey conducted by SITA has shown chatbots are already used by 14% of airlines and 9% of airports, with 68% of airlines planning to introduce AI-driven chatbots”. This helps make the industry more consumer-friendly and can make certain airlines more attractive. This data can also create a personalized experience for people. A computer could use the data that is found from customers in order to choose a hotel or restaurant that is best for their travel experience. Artificial intelligence can clearly improve the service aspect of Aerospace.

How Artificial Intelligence Makes Aerospace More Innovative

AI is able to use techniques to help speed up the production process. As with other industries, aerospace is constantly evolving and artificial intelligence can help with that. When creating new technology engineers can now use Generative Design Software. Essentially, “Generative design software allows engineers and product designers to explore multiple options in less time to find the best design”. This can streamline the process and help make future models of aerospace technology innovative. These new models can be better for the planet and even the companies. Lighter and better designs can further help in reducing fuel costs for aerospace companies. In this way, companies can utilize artificial intelligence to better the environment and reduce costs.

How Artificial Intelligence can help Optimize Flight Plans

Artificial Intelligence can not only help companies save money by training their pilots more efficiently but also through flight routes. artificial intelligence is able to “find optimal flight routes, leading to optimally timed and booked flights, lower operational costs, and higher customer retention”. These plans can certainly enable more efficient flights,  even during flights AI can help. By using AI to relieve flight data it can help inform pilots of situations in the air to better assist them. Another technology in the works using artificial intelligence is a camera powered by artificial intelligence that will expand their vision while flying.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence is a technology that has transformed many aspects of the aerospace industry. Pilots are both benefited from better training procedures and new in-flight technology. Companies are able to improve costs through innovative technologies and fuel efficiency. There are countless more ways to apply artificial intelligence to aerospace as both are expanding industries. In the end, aerospace will become a highly productive and capable industry.
